La Politiquera
You all know I keep mentioning La Nueva Raza News-Magazine. It's an easy task since I work on the layout--flawed as it is, but improving. Well, I also need to mention another good Raza news and information source: La Politiquera--El Periodico que no se queda callado (The periodical that doesn't stay quiet).
LP was started in Houston, TX back in 1990. Headed by Alfredo Rodriguez Santos, LP provides some great Raza perspective on various issues, as well as information on opportunities for Chicanos all over. Of particular interest to Chicano grad students in the latest October-November issue is the new Ph.D. program in Chicano Studies at UC-San Barbara.
At one point, LP was based in Uvalde, TX--a town that was "Mount Pilot" to my own "Mayberry," Crystal City, TX (aka Cristal). When I clicked on the "staffers" button, I saw a couple of names that reminded me of home: the La Pryor (small town north of Cristal) correspondent is Alejandro Perez, a well-known south Texas educator, and the Crystal City correspondent, Juan Duran, a migrant farm worker activist.
Looking at a recent issue, I found this great story on Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria:
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria is working on bringing civil rights leader Dolores Huerta’s story to the big screen. The actress wants to play the co-founder and First Vice President Emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America in the 1960s, who gave birth to 11 children and helped give America’s migrant workers a voice.
Longoria says, “Dolores Huerta was the backbone for the migrant workers’ movement but at the time, women had no voice.” Longoria also harbors desires to star in a historical film about her Aztec ancestors. She told Latina magazine, “I want to do a movie about the Aztecs when they were conquered by the Spanish.”
Eva Longoria is the Chairwoman of Dolores Huerta Foundation Honorary Committee.
Read this periodico. It's a great source!
