Oops! I Missed the Speech!
Apologies to the Chron, even though they had me and some of my favorite blogueros listed on their blog as "go-to" sites to watch during the Bush speech. I did something more 'merkin--hung out with family. I guess that means I'm assimilated? Read on...
After hearing Karl Rove had become a pro-immigrant supporter, and after watching Grover Norquist on CNN tear into the Tom Tancrazies in the Republican Party for causing the loss of Hispanic repug voters, AND after practically been given the Bush speech throughout the day, I completely missed out on the TV speech! I was busy doing the "familia" thing, having dinner and talking politics around the table. Then I enjoyed watching Grey's Anatomy's finale--good show!
So, I came to the great Chron for a copy of the speech. Now, I'll try to break it down:
For decades, the United States has not been in complete control of its borders.
Duh! Were it not for these broken borders, many of my friends wouldn't now be productive members of American society today.
...yet we must remember that the vast majority of illegal immigrants are decent people who work hard, support their families, practice their faith, and lead responsible lives. They are a part of American life but they are beyond the reach and protection of American law.
That's what I just said, except I call them UNDOCUMENTED, you doof!
We are a nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws.
I'll wait till the Enron verdict before agreeing with this line.
We will fix the problems created by illegal immigration, and we will deliver a system that is secure, orderly and fair. So I support comprehensive immigration reform...
Don't we all? Isn't that what MILLIONS marched for pRez? Isn't that what YOUR Tom Tancrazies and Republi-nuts are against?
Five objectives: Militarization, Bracero Program, Spank employers of the undocumented, an earned path to citizenship (that is not amnesty), learn English and become more 'merkin.
Militarization of South Texas just puts fear into the lives of CITIZENS that live in South Texas. A bracero program will only take advantage of low wage workers, provide them little protections, and is just plain bad. Fines for employers must be substantial and must be based on the profits and revenues of those companies if it is to really be effective. Otherwise, it's just another light frat-boy spank. An earned path to citizenship is the only effective tool for all immigrants who have proven their commitment to this country--in taxes, in educational attainment, in community service, etc. As far as the assimilation crap is concerned--no one should be required to be as WHITE as Tom Tancredo. That's what some of these nuts are demanding, and in doing so, support rounding up the 12 million people. They know it's unrealistic, but it lights a fire under Republi-nuts and other crazies. Besides, it should become required for immigrants to learn English when Bush learns it first!
We honor the heritage of all who come here, no matter where they are from...
Tell that to Tom Tancrazy and his band of Nazis, pRez! (Including Bill Frist, Sensenbrenner, Phil King, TED POE, and the Democrats that voted for HR4437!).
Ultimately, much of this is up to the president. Will he control his racists in the Party? Or will he allow them to control the debate utilizing divisive language that comes right out of Nazi Germany?
