DC Predicts: Another Wave's a-Coming!
One thing that amazes me is the ignorance that anti-immigrant nuts have when they believe that the poor in Mexico actually likes their government. It's the poor and those that don't want to work for slave wages in Post-NAFTA anti-worker Mexico that come to the United States to find a new life, a good job, and prosperity. These anti-immigrant nuts blame the Mexican government for "supporting" the border crossings, and get quite offended when Fox or Calderon talk against a fence or against right-wing republican policies against immigrants. People like Fox, Calderon, Bush, and others attended the same schools of economics, and think very much alike--exploit-exploit-exploit at home and abroad!
Yet, when the poor attempt a political revolution to oust what by all means is a very Republican PAN party, and then protest, these nuts support Bush's "democracy" line that the elections were fair. These anti-immigrant nuts don't say a word when the Mexican government attempts to quell political protesters by shooting them and committing other atrocities. They don't want Mexico's poor coming here, they rant that Mexico should help their poor and keep them out of here, but say little when the poor are targeted, shot, and other things that will ultimately cause an increase in border crossings. Ignorance and racist attitudes will not stop immigration. It will take new people-oriented governments to make those changes. But to these anti-immigrant nuts, that would be too "democrat." So, that circle of events continues because of ignorance.
In a Chron article, Fox is already doing a bit of Bush-spin: "Today in Oaxaca, the social peace has been restored," President Vicente Fox said in a speech in northern Mexico. Well, not quite. Holding territory is one thing, winning hearts and minds, quite another. And the mood of many protesters Monday seemed as angry and determined as ever.
The one way a government will not win hearts and minds is by becoming violent against a very vocal opposition. And if anti-immigrant Republicans think that violence is going to put down protesters, they are sadly mistaken. The Mexican people want to take back their government--it was attempted in the last presidential. But when the poorest of the poor, who may not get as involved in these types of political activities get fed up enough, they choose to just leave. And where are they going?
I recall my grandfather's story: He was a pre-teen kid in Mexico. His mom and sister had died of cholera from living in the worst conditions. His brother was called up to fight in the Mexican Revolution and could not take care of my grandfather--leaving him to raise himself and live on his own. How he survived, is still a mystery to me. Ultimately, he was among that Revolution-wave that came to the U.S., paid a small fee, and lived. He became a sharecropper in south Texas, raised his family, owned a business, and achieved what would not have been achievable in Mexico. It's what most people that come here want to do and have done.
What we have is the poorest of the poor still coming to this side--and with good reason. They simply want a shot at something Mexico will never offer as long as the United States continues to support right-wing governments, such as that of Fox and now, Calderon. If right-wing, anti-immigrant nuts believe that the current state of affairs is going to improve conditions in Mexico, they are more ignorant than I thought. And now, with the Mexican government using violence against political protesters, and with popular uprisings readying to take back their country, we can expect the violence to increase the number of people wanting to come to this side.
What will be the Republican response? Added atrocities, like shooting families trying to cross in cold blood? I'm sure some of these nuts would support that--I've gotten the comments and emails. What we all must realize is that if Republicans and idiotic Democrats like Harold Ford and the "carpetbagger" who are trying to capitalize on this issue think that we have a "problem" at the moment, they ain't seen nothing yet!
And escaping a violent government brings up a whole new way of letting people in: ASYLUM. Watch the Republicans and the "conservative" Democrats redefine this term to keep people out; worse, keep them in a violent country. Watch the Republicans and "conservative" Democrats do nothing about the senseless killing--even the murder of an American media correspondent--that will only get worse in Mexico.
Greed is what is causing immigration--on both sides of the border. As long as wage and worker protections in NAFTA are left unenforced in Mexico and other Latin American countries, and as long as these unfair trade policies continue to be supported by Republicans and "blue dog" Democrats, then people will want to come here to escape poverty that we are causing. How can we expect the United States to "enforce current immigration laws" when they refuse to enforce human rights and worker protections in partner-nations?
See, these anti-immigrant nuts have a lot to learn, as well as most Americans. Nothing is black and white in these issues. These issues get more complicated the more involved one gets. It has to do with American foreign and economic policies that exploit and keep hard-working people down. Republicans defend shipping jobs to other countries, and they have enjoyed using the cheap labor that comes to us. But to appease their voting base, they'll say anything to keep these nuts at bay, and continue supporting atrocious governments, bad economic policy, and the very things that these nuts are howling about.
When you really look into the rhetoric of the nuts like Tancredo and the Minutemen, and compare it to Republican policy, it looks like the right-wing is simply waiting to fall apart because of their ignorance and hate. And as a few Democrats become more "conservative" that pool of ignorance and hate will continue to grow. Who will have the guts to lead and make the right decisions?
