Thank you, Eddie #3!
You know, I've seen quite a few negative commentaries about freshman State Rep. Eddie Lucio, III in the last day or so. Sure, he had been one of the "Craddick Ds," but now, he's had a change of heart. As he stated, he decided to give Craddick a session, and he did. Now, he wants something better. Considering the vast majority of the choices will be Republicans, I ask: How much better can it get? Still, I'm not on the floor of the House and only those folks know who will serve as Speaker fairly.
Lucio, III has done a good job as a freshman, and in regards to one of "my" issues, the Republican drive to take down HB1403 (01), he truly impressed me and many of us in the cause when he joined State Rep. Rick Noriega in questioning HB159 and the author Zedler. For me, at least, it was a defining moment for the freshman for the mere fact that this was a hot button issue that will continue to be brought up by Republicans. He took them on now, and I expect he'll continue to fight in the future.
So, when weighing things that annoyed me during the 80th, such as the "Craddick Ds" and support for the issues that mattered to me during the 80th Lege, well, Lucio, III comes out ranked right up there as one of my favorite legislators of the session. And believe me, the "Craddick Ds" annoyed me as much as they did other progressive bloggers. But when something you fight for is under attack, you tend to soften when you notice who is rallying around your issue.
As the 80th gets closer to the end, many of us bloggers will begin to do our own wrap-ups. We'll find out that even some of the Craddick Ds ended up supporting things that we supported. And we may also find things we may not like about non-Craddick Ds. Who knows?
I'll be the first to say that after the 2005 session I was angry at Sen. Mario Gallegos for co-authoring the "Immigrant Tax" legislation; hell, I was ready to support any opponent! And although I still have it my mind because Republicans still try to push it through, I can still appreciate what Senator Gallegos is doing now.
In other words, in the world of politics, we can get over things that annoy us or anger us. Lucio, III did something that alleviated some of the Craddick D annoyance, so I can get over it, at least from the Lucio, III perspective. Other Craddick Ds still need to work on it!
I'm often lectured in regards to my "attacks" on Democrats who I feel aren't acting like Democrats. Nothing annoys and angers me more than an anti-immigrant Democrat and I make it known, only to be lectured that "we need them, too, or we'll lose the majority." Well, I hope folks remember that we need Lucio, III, too, and that much more often than not, he'll vote like a Democrat!
