Racism from Children and Grown-Ups!
Word from my colega, XicanoPwr, that a UT frat is set to have a "Cholo/Ghetto Mexican" rush event has incensed a lot of people. And XP provides a thought-provoking piece on how racism continues in our society:
The problem with a racist “ghetto fabulous” party isn’t that it offends some people, it supports and strengthens an unjust social system that hurts people.
There's also a petition running at the Raza Unida website...sign up to protest these perpetual tools for racism--frats!
And speaking of perpetual idiots, Mac Haik seems to have responded quickly and effectively to the united response for Latino leaders in the Austin area, after that dealership ran an advertisement attempting to sell vehicles with air-conditioned seats: "Tired of the Wet Backs?"
They found out who did it, fired the guy, and issued an apology. Apparently, they've been trying to "learn" their employees on the subject.
Susan Hensley, director of human resources for Mac Haik Management Ltd. of Houston, said the company instituted a sensitivity training course for employees last spring.
But, you see, whenever a company feels the need for this type of training because you have employees who act up, well, the training just isn't effective. How many of us have been sent to a sexual harassment seminar only to see a couple of idiots in the back poking fun at being there and making idiotic comments that are offensive? What? These same idiots wouldn't do the same in a racial/ethnic sensitivity course? Please!
Ultimately, Mac Haik, and other companies that institute these trainings must ask themselves: In this diverse economy, what kind of employees are we really hiring (and promoting, since the fired guy had made it to management)?
