Let's Go To The Races...

Kuff reports on recent filings around Texas for the State Senate. One that caught by eye was the SD-21 race in South Texas, a seat currently held by long-time Sen. Judith Zaffirini. Kuff cites a Statesman analysis on the race:

In far south Texas, [Sen. Judith] Zaffirini faces two announced challengers: former Webb County Judge Louis Bruni and San Antonio trial lawyer Rene Barrientos.

Bruni is one of those perennial candidates, but that actually has money. On the other hand, the candidate she needs to watch out for is the S.A. attorney Barrientos. With strong ties to South Texas because of his successful practice, Barrientos, I believe, has the best shot. Now, if Eagle Pass (Maverick County) were a part of SD-21, I would be ready to say Advantage-Barrientos. Can Barrientos overcome the Zaffirini strongholds, like Zavala and Dimmit Counties and other smaller counties that add up, where he is known to have fought many cases? Given the results from 2004, it is still hard to imagine Zaffirini losing. Turn-out will be of the essence, and far more than 2004's.

SD-04
Out in my (soon to be former) neck of the woods, the question remains: Will Tommy Williams remain unchallenged for the Texas Senate? Another one of those expansive, multi-county districts, (and much like CD-02), it'll be tough to find a formidable opponent this late in the game. Now, will he be challenged in the Republican primary? As of the last reporting period, Williams is banking $300K--not bad, but not all that good either.

HD-127
This is my soon-to-be-former House District. Who is taking on Joe Crabb? Well, I do know of at least one Democrat who has filed TEC paperwork, and all that person needs to do is file for the office (among other things). I just checked the Primary page at the GOP website, and there hasn't been any GOP primary filings against incumbent Joe Crabb. Will Joe Stunja give it another run? Crabb was banking $88K by the last reporting period--not good at all if he gets challenged.
