Journey--Woodlands Pavilion-July 26

(courtesy JourneyMusic.com)

As I see my bud Greg getting nostalgic, I couldn't help but go back to my crazy days during the mid to late 80s. My first rock concert ever was a birthday present from my "newly Austinite" sisters--Journey at The Drum in Austin during the Frontiers Tour. Since then, I've had a long love affair with their music--even leading the charge to utilize "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" as our prom song.

Yes, the break-up, reunion, and second break-up had me siding with the irreplaceable Steve Perry. The Steve Augeri days left much to be desired. I tolerated the Jeff Scott Soto tour (great voice, just not a good Journey fit). And now, they have a new guy--Filipino Arnel Pineda. Guitar-god Neal Schon found him on YouTube!

Journey didn't waste time. They've already been touring outside of the U.S. prior to the June 3 release (just in time for my birthday!!) of Revelation. The new material with Pineda is pretty good. But you can't be a Journey vocalist without having the ability to nail songs like Open Arms, Lights, etc. Well, Pineda has left me pleasantly surprised; so surprised, that I may just end up at the Woodlands to catch their new act. Here's Journey with Pineda at the Festival de la Viña in Chile:

And here's Lights:

There's more. But I just don't want to spoil the show. In fact, June 3rd will provide us with a 3-disc set: Revelation, 11 classics re-recorded with Pineda, and a live DVD recorded in Vegas. Yes, whichever one of you gets me the set for my birthday will be my favorite reader...for life!

Close, but no cigar. Sorry, Stace, Mr. Pineda is okay, but he's no Steve Perry. Schon is still a guitar god (but damn he looks old) and the keyboardist is awesome, but it's just not Journey without Perry. It reminds me of a tribute band--a bunch of wannabes without any original material. Just look at those "new" albums.

If Pineda wants to make a name for himself as a lead singer, he needs to find another band and some original material. Otherwise, he'll always be singing in Steve Perry's shadow.

At any rate, the show with Heart and Cheap Trick in Dallas on Sunday, July 27th might attract me. How 'bout you come visit us and we'll make it a family outing?
