Esquire Endorses America & Rick Noriega
Guest Post by Toni Medellin
I am one of those women who reads Esquire Magazine--religiously--every month. Say what you will about the sexism, objectification, and silliness encapsulated within those pages, some of their articles are entertaining, enlightening, and engaging. The November issue was chock full of good information.
The Cover
Halle Berry does Bill Clinton. No, Bill hasn't strayed, it's simply Ms. Berry dressed (sort of) in a dark blazer and baby blue tie in the same pose that Bill Clinton struck in the December 2000 cover, right before he left office.
The Substance
If you manage to get through all the drivel, to page 140, you'll find a wonderful article entitled Esquire Endorses America. The article, by Nicholas Felton, sums up this election as an "epic fight for the future of our country." I could not agree more.
Like any good Texas Democratic Activist, I flipped to page 159 where they make endorsements in the U.S. Senate race and in all 32 Congressional Districts. Here are a few of my favorites:
Kuddos to the Editorial Board for endorsing Barack Obama for President.
U.S. Senate, Texas: Esquire endorses Rick Noriega. Bonus points go to Esquire's editorial board for listing John Cornyn as one of "The 10 Worst" members of the Senate. Joe Lieberman also made it on to the list, hmmm.
In the U.S. House of Representatives, Esquire makes the following endorsements, which I wholeheartedly agree with:
District 7: Michael Skelly
District 9: Al Green
District 18: Sheila Jackson Lee
District 20: Charlie Gonzalez
District 22: Ciro Rodriquez
District 24: Tom Love (Tom was a guest at our fundraiser in Lantana for Rick Noriega and is a good guy)
District 26: Ken Leach (I can't wait until January when Ken Leach begins to really represent the people of this N. Texas district--which includes me, Ben, and mom. It's time for Michael Burgess to go.)
District 29: Gene Green, and
District 30: Edde Bernice Johnson
The funniest line in the article was in their summation of the District 28 race: "The race for this border district pits a Club for Growth Democrat (you read that right) against a Republican who courts the Hispanic vote with a pitch so condescending, it makes the skin crawl. We're so sorry, District 28. Esquire endorses: Write-in candidate, please."
Pick up a copy on newstands now. Come on, you know you want to see Halle Berry.
